Why compact flouresent lamps can be a waste of your money?

Compact flourescent LED Light Bulbs , or CFL's, were expected to save us money.

But a lot more people are complaining that those energy benefits are balanced out by the heavy price of the bulbs, and the reality that they can fall short long before they are expected to.

Bought Into the Hype Gene Zgoda, like many of us, purchased into the CFL buzz a few decades ago.

He set up the economical lightweight fluorescent light bulbs in his kitchen ceiling light and bathing room mirror light.

The bulbs, he had heard over and over again, preserve energy and last many decades.

Except they didn't.

Gene says he couldn't believe it: Some of his new costly bulbs were burning out after less that 2 decades.

"They say they are going to last longer than old bulbs, and pay for themselves. They are pretty costly. I think I paid $13 for some of them," a disappointed Zgoda said.

Dirty Little Secret

It's the unclean little key of CFL's, that price between a money and $9 each these days.

They can last up to 15,000 time, 10 times the life expectations of a standard incandescent light bulb. But producers confess the bulbs way of life is much smaller, if it is turned on and off regularly, as in a kitchen.

"If we left this on all enough time," Zgoda said, "it would be excellent, they'd last a while. And then we'd spend more electricity! So wheres the gain here?"

The US Division of Energy now indicates not using CFL's if they are not going to be on at least 15 minutes, as in the bathing room.

Newer Alternatives

So what can you do? Consider more recent LED light bulbs, which use as little energy as CFL's, but look like normal bulbs.

Roger Gabel of House Store said "LED is probably the way of the future. They technology is there, the price is coming down considerably."

Home Store has just reduced the price of its Cree range of LED's to just $9 each....half the price of what they were selling for 6 months ago.

These will last for decades, even in Zgoda's kitchen or bath.

Bottom line: CFL's are excellent for lounges, outsdoors where you keep them on for several time. But for a bathing room, consider LED's or the old designed incandescent bulbs so you don't spend your cash.
